Janet Gaynor appeared at the end of the silent era and made a massive impact which ensured her success in talkies. She starred in "Sunrise- A Song Of Two Humans" arguably the best silent. She was born Laura Gaynor in October 1906, she started to act in college and began film acting as an extra in 1924. By 1926 Janet was spotted by director FW Murnau and given the part of the wife in the brilliant "Sunrise" (1927) quickly followed by "7th Heaven" (1927) and "Street Angel" (1928) with Charles Farrell. For these three performances she won the first academy award for for best actress and the only award to a silent actress.

She made eleven films with Charles Farrell and was very successful in talkies, particularly "A Star Is Born" (1937). Janet retired from films in 1939 and settled in Brazil, she was interviewed for the "Hollywood" series in 1980 and died in September 1984.
